Forbidden One
Redirected from Exodia
While the original "Forbidden One" set was extremely hard to obtain (all five pieces were Ultra Rare), they have since been reprinted in lesser rarities; a common practice is to print "Exodia" as an Ultra Rare and the limbs as Commons, making the set much easier to obtain. While the "Forbidden One" Deck was perhaps one of the first Deck types, it still remains a popular one, being supported through several new cards (specifically, new draw engines and draw loops).
"Exodia" is one of the few cards that can actually declare an automatic win. Others include "Destiny Board", "Final Countdown", "Exodius the Ultimate Forbidden Lord", "Last Turn", "Vennominaga the Deity of Poisonous Snakes", "The Creator God of Light, Horakhty", and the Match Winners.
Notably, "Exodia" was the only monster ever specifically mentioned in the rulebooks, even having the rule that should the five pieces be in your hand at any time you win the duel. This was, however, prior to other cards being released with effects that declared an automatic win. "Exodia" has since been removed from the rulebooks, as the effects written on the head are sufficient enough.
"Exodia" was, at first, a beast of such incalculable and intimidating might that he was split up into five distinctive parts - each one of them chained and sealed away by magic from all the other monsters (hence "the Forbidden One"). This would prevent his power from ever being used again. It was used by Shimon against Zorc Necrophades, against whom he was equal; however, "Exodia" was defeated due to the fact that Shimon is a mortal man whereas Zorc has his own power source.
As a result, in the Yu-Gi-Oh card game, there are five distinct "Forbidden One" cards, each one symbolizing a part of the complete "Exodia". In order for "Exodia" to regain his tremendous power, all of the five cards must be reunited in the player's hand. This brings the parts of the Forbidden One together, allowing "Exodia" to break free - his strength being so great that he guarantees the Summoner an automatic win, regardless of the situation.
The effect of "Exodia" makes it one of the most godlike monsters in Duel Monsters; unlike the rest of the monsters used in duels, "Exodia" doesn't rely on attack and defense - it declares an immediate victory whenever complete & uncut - every time all five cards are assembled in the hand, the owner wins.

Exodia cardsEdit
Main cardsEdit
- "Exodia the Forbidden One"
- "Right Arm of the Forbidden One"
- "Left Arm of the Forbidden One"
- "Right Leg of the Forbidden One"
- "Left Leg of the Forbidden One"
Other cardsEdit
While the primary purpose of "Exodia" is to declare an automatic win through having all five pieces, there have been other methods to using it. The first of these was "Exodia Necross", which had to be summoned via "Contract with Exodia". It is a Zombie counterpart of "Exodia" ("Necro" is Greek for dead), and possesses the near-invulnerability of the anime version of "Exodia" as long as the actual "Forbidden One" pieces remain in the Graveyard. It gains 500 ATK during each of the player's Standby Phases and cannot be destroyed in battle or by Spell and Trap effects. It is automatically destroyed if any of the five "Forbidden One" pieces do not exist in the Graveyard. Due to its near-invincibility and increasing strength, it serves as either a trump card that cannot be defeated or as a backup plan if too many "Forbidden One" pieces end up in the Graveyard. The next such incarnation was "Exodius the Ultimate Forbidden Lord", which provided an alternate method of winning with "Exodia". "Exodius" can only be Summoned by returning all monsters in the Graveyard to the Deck. When "Exodius" attacks, a monster must be sent from either the hand or Deck to the Graveyard. "Exodius" gains 1000 ATK for each Normal Monster in the Graveyard. Should all five pieces of "Exodia" exist in the Graveyard as a result of being sent there via the effect of "Exodius", the player automatically wins the duel. Since the "Forbidden One" limbs are Normal Monsters, they power up "Exodius" when sent to the Graveyard by its effect, allowing field presence to be maintained, while also contributing to the possibility of an automatic win. Since its Summoning condition puts monsters from the Graveyard back into the Deck, it allows the possibility of an automatic win even if "Forbidden One" pieces are sent to the Graveyard, and in fact makes it beneficial to send them there again.
In addition, there is "Exxod, Master of The Guard" which greatly resembles "Exodia", though without an automatic win effect. In the same vein as "Necross" being the Zombie counterpart of "Exodia", "Exxod" resembles a completed, though still sealed, "Exodia".
Exodia in the anime seriesEdit
Yu-Gi-Oh!Edit
In the second anime series, the "Forbidden One" cards were notable for never having been successfully played until Yugi Muto was able to assemble all five pieces during his duel against Seto Kaiba during episode 1. "Exodia" appeared in this duel when Yugi gathered all five pieces in his hand, after which it launched an attack, prompted by the line "Exodia, Obliterate" ("Hellfire's Rage, Exodo Flame!" in the original version) from Yugi. The attack wiped out all three of Seto's "Blue-Eyes White Dragons" and reduced his Life Points to zero. However, Yugi never used the "Exodia" cards again in the series because Weevil Underwood threw them overboard during the boat trip to Duelist Kingdom (while saying "This is my strategy!"); despite the best efforts of Joey Wheeler, only two pieces were recovered.
In the Battle City arc, Seeker of the Rare Hunters uses "Exodia" to defeat Joey in a duel. In the duel against Yugi that follows, the Rare Hunter almost wins, but is defeated when Yugi is able to wipe out every single copy of "Exodia the Forbidden One" in his Deck using "Chain Destruction." Following this, Yugi rips up the Exodia cards (for different reasons between the original and dub. In the original, the cards were counterfeits. In the dub, the Exodia cards were real, but they were marked with invisible ink so the Rare Hunter knew when he would draw one).
In the Virtual World arc, Gozaburo Kaiba uses an Exodia Deck against Seto Kaiba believing that since Yugi defeated Kaiba with "Exodia" that Kaiba would fear it. Instead of collecting the parts of "Exodia" in his hand, he sends them to his Graveyard so he can Summon "Exodia Necross". Kaiba is able to overcome his fears and see the weakness in "Exodia Necross" and removes the "Exodia" parts in the Graveyard from play using "Soul Demolition", thus rendering "Necross" powerless.
"Exodia Necross'" effect was marginally different in the anime. It gained a different effect for each "Exodia" piece in the Graveyard. It was immune to Spells if the Left Leg was in the Graveyard, immune to Traps if the Right Leg was in the Graveyard, immune to Monster effects if the Right Arm was in the Graveyard and gained 1000 ATK each time damage that involved it was calculated if the Left Arm was in the Graveyard. Having "the head" in in the Graveyard granted it the effect of not being destroyed in battle.
Exodia vs Zorc NecrophadesEdit
Exodia makes one final appearance during the Dawn of the Duel arc, in episode 216, as the Ka spirit of Shimon Muran. Shimon had sealed "Exodia" a long time ago away due to its godly strength but released him now to engage in battle with Zorc Necrophades. Despite a strong effort, "Exodia" was defeated by Zorc, because "Exodia" drew his power from Shimon, while Zorc used the power of the darkness. Initially, though, both of them seemed imperishable, but as The Forbidden One's life force was drawn from a single human, any damage caused to "Exodia" was also caused to Shimon himself, and Shimon, being a sole mortal, wasn't able to stand up to the power of Zorc, thus allowing the Dark Demon to easily cleave "Exodia" in half, killing Shimon in the process.Yu-Gi-Oh! GXEdit
In Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, "Exodia" is used by two separate duelists. The Yubel-possessed Marcel Bonaparte uses an Exodia Deck, which he discards after obtaining the three Sacred Beasts. He gives the five Exodia pieces to Adrian Gecko as part of a deal.Later in the season, Adrian discovers the seal of "Exodia" in the third alternate dimension and realizes he must sacrifice the Duel Energy of someone close to him in order to free "Exodia". He decides to sacrifice Echo, whom he loved, but he was opposed by Aster Phoenix. The two duel and Aster is able to block Adrian's "Exodia" cards using "Force of Four." However, Adrian is able to make a comeback with "Exodius the Ultimate Forbidden Lord". Echo willingly sacrifices herself to release "Exodia" and despite Aster coming close to victory, Adrian is able to Summon "Exodia" using "Exodius'" automatic victory rule and Aster is defeated.
Adrian uses his Exodia Deck against the Yubel-possessed Jesse Anderson in order to become King of the third alternate dimension. He is defeated when his opponent summons "Yubel", whose effect defeats Adrian as she attacks "Grinder Golem". Had this not happened, Adrian would have won, as he had four "Exodia" pieces in his hand and was about to draw the fifth, having placed it on top of his Deck using "A Feather of the Phoenix".
In the anime, "Exodius" effect was marginally different. It needed be Summoned via "The Ultimate Ritual of the Forbidden Lord" and was immune to Monster, Spell and Trap effects controlled by the player's opponent. Rather than gaining attack for Normal Monsters in the Graveyard, it gained attack only for "Exodia" pieces in the Graveyard and only "Exodia" pieces (not any monster) could be sent from the Deck or hand to the Graveyard when it attacked. Its condition of granting an automatic victory should all "Exodia" pieces be sent to the Graveyard via its effect remained the same.

Standard ExodiaEdit

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Obviously, this deck is vulnerable to Aggro Decks and Beatdown Decks, so cards like "Messenger of Peace", "Wall of Revealing Light", "Gravity Bind", "Spatial Collapse", and "Destiny HERO - Defender" can help stall for time. Plus, cards like "Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive" 'Witch of the Black Forest"and "Emissary of the Afterlife" can help you draw or search for the Exodia pieces. (You could also use "Deep Diver" to move an Exodia card to the top of your Deck.)
You can also use "Hand Destruction" to discard 2 normal pieces of Exodia to search for more parts. Then, once you've done this, use "Dark Factory of Mass Production" to add the 2 discarded pieces.

Bistro Butcher ExodiaEdit
- All 5 pieces of Exodia
- Creature Swap
- Nova Summoner
- The Bistro Butcher
- Shining Angel
- UFOroid
- UFO Turtle
- Masked Dragon
- Troop Dragon
Use "Creature Swap" on your "The Bistro Butcher" to put it on your opponent's side of the field in Attack Position. Have a "Nova Summoner" on your side of the field in Attack Position. Now just attack "The Bistro Butcher" and Special Summon another "Nova Summoner" once the other one gets destroyed. Once you run out of "Nova Summoners" Special Summon "Shining Angel". Keep on doing this and do it in this pattern : "Nova Summoner" > "Shining Angel" > "UFOroid" > "UFO Turtle" > "Masked Dragon" > "Troop Dragon". Each time your monster gets destroyed you will draw 2 cards because of "The Bistro Butcher".
Worm ExodiaEdit
- All 5 pieces of Exodia
- Worm Zero
- 3 Worm Linx
- Future Fusion
- Gold Sarcophagus or any card that can pull a spell card from your deck
- 20+ "Worms" (preferably 6 or more different types of worms)
- Any stall card you desire
Chimeratech ExodiaEdit
- All 5 pieces of Exodia
- Future Fusion
- Deck thinning cards
- Gold Sarcophagus
- Cyber Dragon
- Chimeratech Overdragon
- Machine-type Monsters
Pretty similar to Worm Exodia, the Chimeratech Exodia focuses on using "Future Fusion" to Fusion Summon "Chimeratech Overdragon", thinning your deck and making it easy to draw Exodia.
Suggested combo:
- Cyber Eltanin
- Cyber Larva
- Cyber Ouroboros
- Cyber Valley
- Most of your Machine-type Monsters should be Light.
It's also possible to use Overload Fusion instead of Cyber Eltanin in order to remove Cyber Ouroboros from the deck and summon an even stronger monster (Chimeratech Overdragon), but this card can not be removed from the deck by Future Fusion effect.
Tele/Exodia OTKEdit
- All 5 pieces of Exodia
- Caam, Serenity of Gusto
- Mind Master
- Telekinetic Charging Cell / Brain Research Lab
- Another Psychic-type monster on your side of the field
- Hand Destruction based cards.
This can be made into an FTK with "Double Summon" or "Emergency Teleport". "One for One" also works to this extent but is less likely to work.
You can do this with two "Caam": instead, just shuffle a "Caam" and a Gusto into your Deck to draw a card and use "Mind Master's" effect to get the other one and a "Caam" into your Graveyard.
Cards that can search/summon Mind Master include "Shining Angel", "Damage Condenser", "One for One", "Doctor Cranium", and "Sangan".
"Pot of Avarice" speeds up drawing a little, as it lets you put five Gusta back into your deck and to draw two cards (the Psychics are then summoned by Mind Master).
"Hidden Armory" can search "Telekinetic Charging Cell" but will prevent you from Normal Summoning (so you must already have had the monsters out) and "Terraforming" and "Demise of the Land" can search "Brain Research Lab".
Inmato Exodia Deck Edit
- All 5 pieces of Exodia
- Inmato x3
- 2 or more Cherry Inmatoes
- Shien's Spy/Creature Swap
- Mystic Tomato
- Chainsaw Insect
- Lord Poison
- Rainbow Life/Spirit Barrier
- Seven Tools of the Bandit/Trap Jammer
- Card of Safe Return (to draw extra cards for each "Lord Poison" destroyed) (Traditional Format Only)
- The Beginning of the End (Optional Support)
- Armageddon Knight (Optional Support)
- Mother Grizzly (Optional Support)
You could use "The Bistro Butcher" instead of "Chainsaw Insect". You should not use "Rainbow Life" or "Spirit Barrier" if you do this. This strategy will slightly be more risky as you will be losing life points but instead of drawing at least 9 cards you will draw at least 18 cards.
Suggested Cards:
Lastly, you could use "Sasuke Samurai 3" instead of "Chainsaw Insect" or "The Bistro Butcher". This strategy requires you to use cards such as "Hand Destruction" in order to lose advantage while drawing as well as an Equip Spell Card (preferably "Fusion Sword Murasame Blade").
Suggested Cards:
- Sasuke Samurai 3
- Hidden Armory
- An Equip Spell Card that gives at least 600 Attack.
- Hand Destruction (For use during Battle Phase)
- Reload (For use during Battle Phase)
- Dark World Dealings
- Reinforcement of the Army
DARK Heart Exodia DeckEdit
- All 5 pieces of Exodia
- DARK Normal Monsters
- Veil of Darkness
- Allure of Darkness
- Pot of Avarice (Max one)
- The Beginning of the End
- Heart of the Underdog
- Reload
- Hand Destruction
- Monster Recovery (Max one)
Emperor Swap Exodia DeckEdit
- All 5 pieces of Exodia
- Swap Frog x3
- By Order of the Emperor x3
- Ultimate Offering x3
- Solemn Wishes
- Gravity Bind
- Magic Planter x3
- Upstart Goblin x3
- 2 or more Mask of Darkness
- Dark Eruption
- Legacy of Yata-Garasu x3
- Magical Mallet
- A Cat of Ill Omen
- Sangan
This strategy works by stalling your opponent with "Gravity Binds" until you draw "Swap Frog", "By Order of the Emperor" and "Ultimate Offering". When you do so, Normal Summon "Swap Frog", activating his effect to send a monster to the Graveyard. Negate his effect with "By Order of the Emperor", drawing 1 card, and return "Swap Frog" to your hand with his own effect. Activate "Ultimate Offering", paying 500 Life Points to Summon the Frog again, creating a loop that ends until you run out of Life Points (Or, if you have "Solemn Wishes", infinite). Once you can't pay for "Ultimate Offering", use all card-drawing effects in your hand ("Upstart Goblin", "Magic Planter", etc.) and all "Magical Mallet"s to draw the remaining Exodia pieces.
"Dark Eruption" works with "Mask of Darkness" (allowing you to get back any pieces of the combo your opponent may have destroyed or, at least, "Legacy of Yata-Garasu"), "A Cat of Ill Omen" (a slow but effective way to gather all pieces of the combo), "Sangan" (for "Swap Frog" or even to skip the combo completely and get the Exodia pieces) and, obviously, the 5 pieces of Exodia (in case your opponent uses a discarding effect).
Watt/Exodia OTKEdit
This OTK uses the effect of "Watthydra" equipped with "Twin Swords of Flashing Light - Tryce" to inflict 1000 Damage to the opponent and to add 2 Exodia Pieces from your deck to your hand within 2 turns. Using this effect every turn will allow the player to add 2 Exodia Piece the next turn after its first use. Spell Cards like "Gold Sarcophagus" and "Pot of Duality" are used to maximize the effectiveness of the OTK. "Messenger of Peace" will also protect "Watthydra" from being destroyed by battle.Cards for this Deck include:
- 5 Pieces of Exodia
- Level 4 Watt monsters (Eg. "Wattgiraffe", "Wattpheasant" etc.)
- "Wattkiwi" or "Wattberyx (This is a Level 3 Watt Tuner Monster)
- "Watthydra"
- "Twin Swords of Flashing Light - Tryce"
- "Messenger of Peace"
- "Pot of Duality"
- "Gold Sarcophagus"
Traditional Format Exodia DecksEdit
Note: All decks in this section contain some cards that are only allowed in the Traditional Format.Manticore's Exodia EngineEdit
- Foolish Burial
- 1 Manticore of Darkness in your hand and 1 in your deck
- Card of Safe Return
Alternatively, you could use "Generation Shift" instead of "Foolish Burial" - or indeed, any spell or trap where you discard a card as a cost.
Infinite Equip Draw LoopEdit
First, "Royal Magical Library" and "Gearfried the Iron Knight" must be both face-up on the field. Equip "Gearfried the Iron Knight" with "Butterfly Dagger - Elma". Due to "Gearfried the Iron Knight's" effect, "Butterfly Dagger - Elma" will be destroyed, but because of "Butterfly Dagger - Elma's" effect, it will be returned to your hand instead. Also, "Royal Magical Library" will receive a counter. When there are 3 counters on "Royal Magical Library", you get to draw a card. So keep using "Butterfly Dagger - Elma" until you draw all 5 cards of Exodia. (based on the fact that Butterfly Dagger - Elma is banned in Advanced you can only use this deck in causal and Traditional play)Makyura's ExodiaEdit
- All 5 pieces of Exodia
- Makyura the Destructor
- Morphing Jar
- Hand Destruction
- Any Traps with Draw effect
Another combo that works similarly is "Temple of the Kings" with "Sixth Sense", allowing you to draw cards easily or even milling your Deck with complacency.
Dragonfrog ExodiaEdit
- All 5 pieces of Exodia
- 3 Substitoad
- 3 D. Tribe or DNA Surgery
- 3 Super Rejuvenation
- 20+ "Frog" monsters
- Staple draw cards used in Frog Burn FTK
Colossal LoopEdit
- All 5 pieces of Exodia
- Colossal Fighter
- Card of Safe Return
- Any monster with more ATK than your Colossal Fighter
- Spirit Barrier or Rainbow Life
